- Hoa Lo Prison Museum (Hanoi Hilton)
Jan 21, 2013
The first half of the museum depicted how Vietnamese prisoners were treated by the French. The prison was built by the French and named Maison Centrale. Prisoners were shackled together by a bar that ran along the rooms. Some prisoners got so skinny that they were able to slip their feet out of the shackles.
Many escaped by squeezing through sewers. Political prisoners were housed in other rooms so regular prisoners wouldn't be able to talk to them. There were torture equipment displayed in rooms. There was even a guillotine. Men and women were separated into different cells. Pregnant women would give birth and the baby would stay with the mother for a few months before being taken away to live outside of the prison.
Secret messages were written from the bark of this one tree. That tree is still there. After all the depressing cells, you get to the area where the American pilots were kept. Completely different. No wonder the US POWs called it Hanoi Hilton. John McCain's flight suit is on display along with photos of the pilots being rescued after being shot down. There are also a bunch of photos of the US POWs playing bball and decorating Christmas trees. Found that odd but..
