46th National Skills Competition

How lucky am I that in my first year here, the 46th National Skills Competition was held at my school. Right when we got back from summer vacation, the school was buzzing with so much going on. What is the skills competition? My school is the top vocational high school in chungbuk province and they specialize in technical machinery like robotics, aviation, computer engineering... Every year, there is a nation wide competition to determine who is the best.

Andong Maskdance Festival 2011

The Andong Maskdance Festival was a far place to visit. Its in the Gyeongsanbuk province tucked away in the country. Luckily they had the super nice buses traveling to and from the major cities so it wasn't too bad. The only bad thing was the lack of a bathroom stop.

Jinju Lantern Festival

The Fortress
The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival originates from the lantern lighting custom used during the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle of the Imjinwaeran War (Japanese invasion, 1592) as a military strategy to prevent Japanese troops from wading the Namgang River.

Braaidag - South African BBQ

Coming to Korea, I never thought I'd meet so many South Africans. I was invited, by my friends who live in Jincheon, to this thing called a Braai and to Americans, it's just a BBQ. Still, it was fun listening to the Afrikaans being spoken and the different foods that were present. Not to mention, there was some traditional(?) South African dancing.

1st Chuseok with Amanda and Lea

Chuseok is the equivalent to Thanksgiving except it lasts about 3 days and occurs during the fall equinox. Since this was our first Chuseok, Amanda, Lea and I decided to celebrate it together. It would also be the first time that we were together since orientation. We met in Seoul and did some shopping and street food eating.

Chungju Martial Arts Festival

The Martial Arts Festival in Chungju was a provincial field trip. We were told that this would be the last provincial field trip since they were cutting the budget. I thought I was going to see all sorts of martial arts but we were only able to see taekwondo and karate. It was because we arrived at the festival too early and we didnt stay long enough.

NC: My Sister's Wedding

The main reason why I went back home to visit 6 months after I left for Korea was because my sister was getting married. While all my friends were vacationing parts of southeast Asia, I was flying back to the states.

Summer 2011

In my attempt to update, today is the only day that I don’t have samul nori practice which is why I actually have time to update! I shall update the more recent happenings and then work on the stuff that’s already happened.

Chil Bo San Hiking 칠보산

The last day of school was the teacher hiking trip to Chil Bo San 칠보산 in Goesan. Chil Bo San literally means seven beaming mountains. I still haven't bought proper hiking shoes so I just went in my converse. I didn't know what to expect other than hiking.

August EPIK Orientation Performance

Since monday 7/18 ive had samul nori practice everyday for basically 3 hours. my left arm is sore from beating the drum, my head keeps repeating drum beats and my pinky has a small (but growing) callus...

Busan Shark Diving

My friends from Daegu are thrill seekers so I wasn't surprised when they asked me to go shark dive with them. I can't swim or float. I can only do a pretty decent backstroke. Weird. I know. We booked a reservation and on one sunny weekend and made the trip to Busan.

Busan Sand Festival

The Busan Sand Festival happens every year. I went with my friend Lea whom I hadn't seen since orientation. Right when we got out of the subway, there was a parade on the way. It was a bunch of people dressed and colored in paint as smurfs. They were doing back flips and taekwondo moves. There was also this weird alien contraption thing.

Buddha's Birthday 2011

This was the first time I've ever celebrated Buddha's birthday. It was also the first time I was aware of such a holiday. It's really big here. About two weeks beforehand, the entire city hung colorful lanterns all along the river.

Children's Day 2011

Children's Day is an official Korean holiday. I thought this was a random holiday. This year it happened to land on a thurs so my friends and I decided to make some boxed lunches and head to the river for a picnic. We met in my apt and got busy preparing our lunch. Then headed to the river and ate everything.

Beopjusa Temple 법주사

An hour from Cheongju city stands Beopjusa Temple. Although the magnificent temple is dedicated to the worship of the Maitreya Buddha, it was built with the hope that ancient Korea’s Three Kingdoms would be reunified. Sadly, Some 14 centuries later millions are still hoping for a unified Korean peninsula. We went around the time of Buddha's birthday so there were lanterns hung everywhere.

JUMP: the play

Min Sol took me to my first play(?) in Korea. Except it wasn't really a play. It was more like a play without words but with sounds. Which made it more enjoyable for me since I was dreading the language barrier a bit..
