This Peru trip has been talked about by Lu, Katriz and I for quite some time. We’ve all talked about wanting to go to South America and showing them how to backpack around a country.
These two were so excited that when we would talk about it while I was traveling, they would say things like “Let’s go visit Peru and another country.” Though that would be doable, we only had 2 weeks. Another time they were really excited and thought it would be possible to visit 3 countries! No. I don’t like blitzing countries because you don’t really get to immerse yourself in the culture and experience. I didn’t want to be moving from place to place too often.

So having sat down with them one night in Q-cup while drinking boba and eating calamari, we finally bought our tickets to Peru. And only Peru. With the exception a 10 hour layover in Mexico City and a 2 hour layover in Cancun on the flight back.

SFO to MEX
Check in and security went pretty smoothly. There weren’t a lot of people. The only downside was Lu getting her backpack checked by security and them taking her carry-on sized Aveeno. I secretly think they took it away for themselves. Our gate wasn’t packed even though the flight was. We grabbed a sandwich, chips, chocolate, and water and found an area in our gate that had chairs and outlets. Moments later our gate was changed but wasn’t a big deal. Boarding was also delayed by an hour. We literally were the last ones to board before they started boarding stand bys and we took off at midnight. We luckily had the seats in row 10 which was apparently Economy Plus. All I know is that there was a LOT of leg room for 3 small girls. I don’t know why we got upgraded but I hope our MEX to LIM flight will be upgraded too since that flight is longer. This flight was only 4 hrs long.
After disembarking the plane at 430am, we walked through these underground passageways that looked pretty creepy. Yes we were literally underground. Got our passports stamped, picked up our bags and queued to walk out of customs. While you hand your customs paper to the worker, you have to press a button and this button will either give you a happy face or a sad face. Lu and Katriz both got a happy face. I got the sad face which means my bags had to be inspected. Inspected must mean something different because the two people checking my big and small backpack hardly looked in there. They moved a few zippers, took the rain jacket off my big backpack, unclipped some clips, looked quickly inside and handed me my bags back. After that we walked out of the sliding doors and looked for the international departures sign. We found it and had to walk up some dodgy stairs where a worker was sitting down possibly on his break. We got to the departures hall and spent a good amount of time looking for our airline but never finding it. We asked a worker but they didn’t speak English.. but the lady was kind enough to point us to someone who would understand us. So we went and asked and were told to take the aerotrain to terminal 2. We had no idea there was another terminal, there were no signs indicating such a thing existed. We went looking for it and were even approached by a homeless man. I think he was trying to help us but we couldn’t understand what he was saying. We eventually found the train and got to the right terminal.
We found our airline but it was closed. We got some Krispy Kreme and I got coffee. We thought about checking into a hotel for a few hours while we got some sleep but eventually we decided against it. We also decided not to leave the airport. Normally I would’ve chucked my backpacks into a locker and got on the metro. But we decided to just chill and take over a bench while waiting for LAN Airlines to open up their counters in the hopes that they would let us check in early. It is now 11am and they are still not open.

1pm and they finally opened their counter. We dropped our bags off and went in search of lunch. Lunch was no bueno… maybe it was because the food was airport food? But seriously what I ate didn’t have any taste. The girl at the counter also added 3 extra USD. I paid $9 instead of $6..oh well, my fault for not being observant enough. Katriz and Lu’s food looked really good in the pictures but they said it didn’t taste as good as it looked.
MEX to LIM
After lunch we went and got through security and had some time to kill before we boarded. Katriz read and wrote some stuff on my black notebook which consists of jokes, riddles, stories, pick up lines, questions and other things I’ve picked up from traveling. We thought we weren’t sitting next to each other because our seats were 22D, 22F, 22H. So I went to the lady at the counter and asked if we could be seated together. She looked at me a bit confused and told me we were sitting together. When we boarded the plane, it turns out that they don’t use all the alphabets like most normal airlines. They skip every other letter: A and C, DFH in the middle, and J and L on the other side. We sat right next to the bathroom which wasn’t too bad.
Dinner was good. I had tortellini and there was bread and tiramisu cake. My flight attendant was super nice. He offered me some wine, of course I had some. And then I turn to look at Lu and Katriz and saw their glasses empty. Apparently their flight attendant didn’t offer them any. I think its because he thinks they’re underage still. So when my guy came back for refills, I gave Lu my glass and filled hers up with white wine. The other guy never even stopped to ask Katriz if she wanted any. The rest of the flight Lu and Katriz watched some shows or movies. I helped Lu get past a level on Inside Out’s memory game. Didn’t sleep too well =(

* Katriz left my neck pillow inside the airplane after we all looked to make sure we didn't leave anything behind... I seem to also get things stolen or left behind. I got my neck pillow stolen while in Laos inside the all girl dorm. I had my tin water bottle mysteriously disappear while on an overnight bus ride in Myanmar. The guy sleeping below me accidentally took my red towel...what else am I going to lose/get stolen?
Immigration and customs went a lot more smoothly and we were out the door looking for our taxi driver in no time. Katriz found him with the sign and my name on it while Lu and I exchanged money. Fernando was his name and he was like a sweet old grandpa. Too bad he wasn’t our actual driver but he gave us his business card anyways. Our taxi driver didn’t speak much English but he seemed nice. We also ran over a drunk walking from the beach. He was in all dark clothes and came out of nowhere! Good thing our driver knows what he’s doing otherwise… seriously the guy was inches from getting hit. Our driver also drove the scenic route. Or it would’ve been if it was day time.
At our hostel everyone was I’m bed in our 10 mixed dorm. Lu and I got top bunk. The guy sleeping below me, Denny, lent me his flashlight because I couldn’t find mine and we were trying to get our night clothes and toothbrushes out. Actually he said I could have it but I left the flashlight next to his phone when we were done with it. This hostel is packed because its so high rated but the downsides would have to be the outside noise, lack of outlets on the top bunks and no communal bathrooms. For such a big hostel, they need more bathrooms.

So far Peru is fairly clean. There are a lot of people out at night just standing on the side of the street. I think they’re waiting for taxis…? You’re not allowed to honk in some places. They have roundabouts. They drive on the left side of the car. Well its only been a few hours so we’ll see what the morning brings =)
