You can literally walk 5 steps from Wat Phan Tao and be in Wat Chedi Luang.
I didn’t realize I was in a different temple until came upon the sign. This temple’s name means “The temple of the Great Stupa” because of the giant chedi (pagoda) that a King ordered to be constructed to enshrine the ashes of his father. The most important and revered Buddha image in Thailand, the emerald Buddha, came from this temple. It was then moved to Luang Prabang in Laos and is now currently in Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok next to the Grand Palace.

This was my favorite temple in Chiang Mai. I can’t really say why it’s my favorite. It just is. It wasn’t too crowded and it wasn’t too big of a temple. Maybe it was because there was some ceremony going on. There was a bunch of monks chanting and this big rig had a Naga statue and was placing it on block. I sorta just sat under a tree and watched the whole procession unfold. Lots of chanting, lots of annoying tourists getting all up in the monks’ faces and spaces. Made me feel disgusted, don’t these people know anything? After a while I got really annoyed watching the dumb tourists that I couldn’t enjoy the ceremony anymore so I left the area and decided to sit in a quieter place. I found another tree and sat under that. I could still hear the monks chanting so that was nice.

Before I left the temple, I saw that there was an area called “Monk Time” where you could go and talk to a monk about anything. There was only one monk there (probably because all the other ones were busy chanting) and I wanted to go and have a conversation with him but there were 5 people there already.. I think it’s pretty cool that they have that.
